Entering Expressions in Mathematica

Mathematica has the most efficient method of entering equations into computer.  You will need to learn a few control+something key combinations to enjoy its full power but you can always get your work done either by using their menu, or by looking up the control+something key stroke combination from the menu.

How to enter +, −, × and ÷ operations

For additions and subtractions, use + and −.

For multiplications, use a space character or a * character.  For example x \times y should be entered as either x y or x*y.

For divisions, use a / character.  For example x \div y should be expressed as x/y.

For grouping the operations, use parenthesis.  For example (x+y) \div (z+w) should be entered as (x+y)/(z+w).

How to enter fractions

You can enter fraction as an actual fraction by using the control-/ key combination.

You can also find the fraction template through menu under: “Pallets”->”Writing Assistant”

Under “Typesetting” section,

you will find the the control-key sequence for each command by hovering your mouse over each one.

How to enter roots

You can enter square and other roots the control-/ key combination.

You can also find the fraction template through menu under: “Pallets”->”Writing Assistant”  You will the the control-key sequence for each command by hovering your mouse over each one.

Cube root and other roots can be entered by using the following key combination
